SUMMARY:Rancho Simi Trail Blazers Hike: Mt. McCoy Trail
DESCRIPTION:Moderate 3 miles RT with 675’ of elevation gain/loss.\nWe will hike up via a series of switchbacks to an isolated knoll in a 200-acre open space region at the western end of Simi Valley. At the summit (1\,325′) there is a white cross\, erected in 1941 and a 360-degree view including Sinaloa Lake\, Wood Ranch\, the Bard Reservoir\, the Simi Hills\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. We’ll return the way we came. \nHike Leader: Mike Kuhn \nOn the western end of Simi Valley\, Mt. McCoy is known as the hill with the large cross at the top. From the top of Mt. McCoy\, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views in every direction\, including views of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library\, Wood Ranch\, Old Boney Mountain and the Channel Islands (weather permitting). Cut under the direction of the Rancho Simi Trail Blazers in 1997\, the trail leading the top is 1.5 miles long and climbs 675 feet. It contains switchbacks surrounded by coastal sage scrub\, chaparral and other vegetation. This is a mild hike and is great for all ages. From the top\, there is a dirt track extending south toward the Presidential Library as well as a dirt trail extending north\, down the mountain\, to connect with Tierra Rejada Road. The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District owns 200 acres surrounding Mt. McCoy. \nWell behaved\, leashed dogs are always welcome. \nNote: Hike canceled on holidays\, if it rains\, or if there is a Red Flag Warning in place. \nPREPAREDNESS: Bring 2-3 liters/quarts of water (or other suitable liquid) and lunch/snack. Wear appropriate footwear (preferably hiking boots) and be prepared for bright sunlight (sunglasses)\, heat (layers of clothing)\, and/or precipitation (rain gear). Hiking pole(s) and a camera might come in handy. \nNOTE: At the beginning of each outing you will be required to read and sign a liability release form (a sign-in sheet). \nDIRECTIONS TO THE STARTING POINT OF THE HIKE: \nTake Hwy 118 to the Madera Road exit in Simi Valley.\nHead south 1.4 miles on Madera Road to just before its intersection with Royal Avenue (there’s a traffic light at the intersection).\nTurn left (east) into the strip mall parking lot in the northeast quadrant of the Madera Road/Royal Avenue intersection and park near the Donut Delite store.\nWait for the hiking leader(s).\nNOTE: This will be the starting point of the hike because there is very little parking space at the Mt. McCoy Trail trailhead (and the trailhead is within a short walking distance of our starting point near Donut Delite). \nDISCLAIMER: \nThe organizer(s) or leader(s) take no responsibility and will not be held responsible for any injuries or accidents that may occur during any Rancho Simi Trail Blazers Club (RSTB) hike/outing. DESCRIPTION:Suggested skill level: Beginner and up \nNot just a useful tool\, but also the first step to all of your bladesmithing dreams\, our Letter Opener is a Discovery workshop as well as a prerequisite for all of our blade workshops. \nThe Letter Opener workshop is perfect as either an introductory or a follow-up course\, as it introduces techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects. You’ll learn how to work with slightly larger stock\, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You’ll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle\, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade\, you’ll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally\, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. Don’t be afraid if that sounds like a lot; we’ll be there every step of the way to make sure you master all the skills you need.

DESCRIPTION:Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class\, the Forge Safety Workshop and Adam’s Forge Membership  \nPlease note: Beginning on January 1\, 2024\, all attendees of Open Forge sessions must have successfully passed the Forge Safety class\, which is free to members and available for sign-up on the class calendar. If you wish to use the power hammers\, you must have successfully passed the Power Hammer Safety class. \nNot a class\, but a swell time to get in the forge to do what you wanna do. You can bring your own material and work on your own project. This can be a chance to finish that piece you started or work out a technique you’ve been meaning to try. One of our intrepid instructors will be on hand for supervision and guidance\, although these are not teaching workshops. \nPlease note: these sessions are intended to support our students as they practice skills that are within their ability range.  Please do not use our forge and tools to experiment with new techniques that are beyond your skill level.  When in doubt\, ask the instructor. \nAs with all of our workshops\, we require that students attending Open Forge sessions be at least 12 years old. A student who is not an adult (18 and older) will need to have a parent or guardian present at ALL times during the session. DESCRIPTION:Suggested skill level: Beginner and up \nNot just a useful tool\, but also the first step to all of your bladesmithing dreams\, our Letter Opener is a Discovery workshop as well as a prerequisite for all of our blade workshops. \nThe Letter Opener workshop is perfect as either an introductory or a follow-up course\, as it introduces techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects. You’ll learn how to work with slightly larger stock\, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You’ll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle\, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade\, you’ll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally\, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. Don’t be afraid if that sounds like a lot; we’ll be there every step of the way to make sure you master all the skills you need.

SUMMARY:Rancho Simi Trail Blazers Hike: Mt. McCoy Trail
DESCRIPTION:Moderate 3 miles RT with 675’ of elevation gain/loss.\nWe will hike up via a series of switchbacks to an isolated knoll in a 200-acre open space region at the western end of Simi Valley. At the summit (1\,325′) there is a white cross\, erected in 1941 and a 360-degree view including Sinaloa Lake\, Wood Ranch\, the Bard Reservoir\, the Simi Hills\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. We’ll return the way we came. \nHike Leader: Mike Kuhn \nOn the western end of Simi Valley\, Mt. McCoy is known as the hill with the large cross at the top. From the top of Mt. McCoy\, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views in every direction\, including views of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library\, Wood Ranch\, Old Boney Mountain and the Channel Islands (weather permitting). Cut under the direction of the Rancho Simi Trail Blazers in 1997\, the trail leading the top is 1.5 miles long and climbs 675 feet. It contains switchbacks surrounded by coastal sage scrub\, chaparral and other vegetation. This is a mild hike and is great for all ages. From the top\, there is a dirt track extending south toward the Presidential Library as well as a dirt trail extending north\, down the mountain\, to connect with Tierra Rejada Road. The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District owns 200 acres surrounding Mt. McCoy. \nWell behaved\, leashed dogs are always welcome. \nNote: Hike canceled on holidays\, if it rains\, or if there is a Red Flag Warning in place. \nPREPAREDNESS: Bring 2-3 liters/quarts of water (or other suitable liquid) and lunch/snack. Wear appropriate footwear (preferably hiking boots) and be prepared for bright sunlight (sunglasses)\, heat (layers of clothing)\, and/or precipitation (rain gear). Hiking pole(s) and a camera might come in handy. \nNOTE: At the beginning of each outing you will be required to read and sign a liability release form (a sign-in sheet). \nDIRECTIONS TO THE STARTING POINT OF THE HIKE: \nTake Hwy 118 to the Madera Road exit in Simi Valley.\nHead south 1.4 miles on Madera Road to just before its intersection with Royal Avenue (there’s a traffic light at the intersection).\nTurn left (east) into the strip mall parking lot in the northeast quadrant of the Madera Road/Royal Avenue intersection and park near the Donut Delite store.\nWait for the hiking leader(s).\nNOTE: This will be the starting point of the hike because there is very little parking space at the Mt. McCoy Trail trailhead (and the trailhead is within a short walking distance of our starting point near Donut Delite). \nDISCLAIMER: \nThe organizer(s) or leader(s) take no responsibility and will not be held responsible for any injuries or accidents that may occur during any Rancho Simi Trail Blazers Club (RSTB) hike/outing.
