Lt Gen Collins will discuss the Missile Defense Agency – its responsibilities\, its challenges and opportunities\, and the importance of what the MDA does every day for our nation’s security. \nTo sign up for the program\, please click here. \nOn March 23\, 1983\, in a televised address to the nation\, President Reagan announced his intention to embark upon groundbreaking research into a national defense system that could make nuclear weapons obsolete.  At the heart of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was the development of a space-based missile defense program that could protect America from a large-scale nuclear attack.  Flash forward to today\, and now our country has the Missile Defense Agency to develop and deploy a system to defend the United States and its allies – exactly what President Reagan envisioned 40 years ago. \nLieutenant General Heath Collins is the Director\, Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and advises the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering on Missile Defense programmatic policy\, requirements\, priorities\, systems\, resources\, and programs. MDA’s global mission is to develop\, test\, field\, and sustain integrated\, layered missile defense capabilities to defend the United States\, its deployed forces\, allies and friends against missile attacks in all phases of flight. Lt Gen Collins directs the $11 billion global organization with more than 9\,000 military\, civilian and contract personnel. He exercises management oversight for the Missile Defense System to include program management of missile defense resources which he synchronizes with the services in support of Combatant Command requirements.

DESCRIPTION:Prerequisite: Any Discovery Class\, the Forge Safety Workshop and Adam’s Forge Membership  \nPlease note: Beginning on January 1\, 2024\, all attendees of Open Forge sessions must have successfully passed the Forge Safety class\, which is free to members and available for sign-up on the class calendar. If you wish to use the power hammers\, you must have successfully passed the Power Hammer Safety class. \nNot a class\, but a swell time to get in the forge to do what you wanna do. You can bring your own material and work on your own project. This can be a chance to finish that piece you started or work out a technique you’ve been meaning to try. One of our intrepid instructors will be on hand for supervision and guidance\, although these are not teaching workshops. \nPlease note: these sessions are intended to support our students as they practice skills that are within their ability range.  Please do not use our forge and tools to experiment with new techniques that are beyond your skill level.  When in doubt\, ask the instructor. \nAs with all of our workshops\, we require that students attending Open Forge sessions be at least 12 years old. A student who is not an adult (18 and older) will need to have a parent or guardian present at ALL times during the session. DESCRIPTION:A public skating session is a leisure skating session for skaters of all ages and abilities. It is common to see skaters of all ages and abilities on the ice during public skating sessions.  Figure skaters are able to get in some practice during public skating sessions. Beginners\, recreational skaters\, and hockey players skate on sessions that are open to the general public. \nPublic Session skaters may wear protective helmets\, such as hockey or bicycle helmets. Also\, gloves (hockey or regular) may be worn to keep hands warm and protected on public sessions. NO other hockey gear is permitted on public sessions. Skaters will be asked to remove all other hockey gear prior to returning to the ice. There are no exceptions and no refunds will be given for this rule. SUMMARY:Adam's Forge: Discovery: Letter Opener
DESCRIPTION:Suggested skill level: Beginner and up \nNot just a useful tool\, but also the first step to all of your bladesmithing dreams\, our Letter Opener is a Discovery workshop as well as a prerequisite for all of our blade workshops. \nThe Letter Opener workshop is perfect as either an introductory or a follow-up course\, as it introduces techniques that are useful in a wide range of blacksmithing projects. You’ll learn how to work with slightly larger stock\, and be introduced to the proper choice and use of tongs to hold the hot steel. You’ll use the vise and a twisting wrench for the handle\, and practice tapering and turning scrolls as well.  In forging the blade\, you’ll learn about full-face and half-face hammer blows.  Finally\, you can apply a hot wax finish to protect your letter opener. Don’t be afraid if that sounds like a lot; we’ll be there every step of the way to make sure you master all the skills you need.
